"Differently Accessible" conference | Friday, June 24
...When a place is open to many but perhaps not all...
Different points of view on an issue that is before everyone's eyes but which, often, no one can really see: how people with various disabilities experience the difficulties of buildings, streets and everyday life in their cities.
Sometimes a handicapped person's greatest disability is that of being invisible. On June 24 at 6 p.m. there will be a short lecture on the topic of accessibility. A short story will be the expedient to talk about the difficulties that people with various disabilities have in experiencing the buildings, streets and life of their cities on a daily basis. Three different speakers will give you their perspective on an issue that is in everyone's sight but that no one can really see. The issue is that we are great at designing tools to enable people with disabilities to do things they otherwise could not do but we persist in designing spaces that disregard or even prevent these people from using these tools.
It is like giving someone who is cold a lighter to start a fire but not the paper and wood to burn.
